It was Wilhelm Marr, who coined the word, anti-Semite out of his need to turn religious anti-Judaism into racist hate for Jews. The lunitict believed Jews were the reason Germany was not a democracy in his time. He understood that people can change their religion but they cannot change their race, so he invented a new word (and a new race) that could be used to percuit Jews even if they converted to other religions. What is strange is how Jews embraced his idea of a Jewish race.
