Introduction

We have posted many BIM vacancies throughout our social media (by the way — have you subscribed? We have twitter, facebook and linkedin apatrt from Medium). In this text, we decided to aggregate them all and find out whether it is hard to meet the requirements for BIM-related positions and how difficult it is to be employed in the different countries within the industry.

There is a total of three criteria we are going to analyze: countries where BIM vacancies are most actual, the requirements in all of those countries and how to meet them and useful tips on how to get a job in the industry. We aggregated a number of vacancies and are ready to present the brief introduction into the BIM openings.

Countries

In this paragraph, we shall consider several countries and compare them to our criteria: the income relative to the average salary in the region, the number of specialists in the field in the area and the average qualification estimated by respective specialists.

According to Indeed.com, there are 432 vacancies in NY City with the estimated salary of 94 thousand dollars per year. Compared to the average annual wages in the region which is about 70 thousand we may decide that the BIM industry in the NY is averagely more profitable than the most of the others businesses.

Yes, we know — this is the most common picture to use when talking about the construction.

Or take San-Francisco, for instance. The average annual salary is 99 thousand dollars, but there are more wages with the pay equal to 75 thousand than those more profitable. However, the average salary reported by real BIM employees is about 65 thousand dollars.

Let us slightly switch towards Europe. Careers-in-construction website tells us — the estimated salary for the BIM vacancies is somewhere between 50 and 75 thousand, taking the average traditionally, 62,5 thousand pounds. That is about 80 thousand dollars. That is approximately 19 thousand less than the analogical positions in the USA.

BIM jobs tied with the architectural means tell us a different story: an average salary here is somewhere between 37 and 45 thousand pounds (48–58 thousand dollars) per year. As we can see, the works on the projection and implementing BIM technologies into production cost more than the actual construction done within the platform.

Let us not forget the Asian vacancies: sadly, it is nearly impossible to find open data on the salaries and their average level there. The only salary resource is the Region Up portal which claims the wages of a BIM Manager to be 50–80 thousand dollars with an average figure of 65 thousand.

Requirements

It is crucial to analyze just how vital it is to meet the requirements for the job. In the paragraph, we look at some examples of qualifications and how/where to achieve them.

A list of requirements varies significantly from job to job. The less paid vacancies are often required just a “rigorous and engaging attitude when it comes to your work.” However, the more severe situations demand three to five years experience in implementing BIM solutions, knowing of working industry standards and ability to embed the structural data of its seekers. That is not all the needs, but you get the idea.

The Indeed Portal, mentioned earlier in this text suggests all job seekers acquire appropriate education, e.g., in Architecture/Engineering/ Construction Management or related fields.

While now we are talking exclusively about the hard skills gained through the years of learning, the employers also prioritize the soft skills, needed in every position including BIM such as detail and accuracy, ability to communicate thoughts and technical ideas in an accessible way, an attitude of taking the initiative hand in hand with an enthusiasm.

Well, at least this looks more realistic!

Tips

Jobseekers are often making mistakes while searching for the dream vacancy. The BIM branch is no different. In this topic we are going to discuss the typical tips and guidance to BIM-related jobs.

So, here are a few tips based on the requirements:

  • Get an education

At its average, the specified courses allow one to raise the salary 40–50%. While somewhere wages may reach 100 thousand dollars, some vacancies offer just 47–50. And the main requirement difference is an education!

  • Get an experience

This tip may sound like the vicious circle — how do I get a job without a working knowledge — , but it is possible to get the starting experience in various internships and partnership programs. The only flaw — you will probably not get paid or receive minimum wages. So it is recommended to participate in such activities while still in college or university to minimize the risks of unemployment in the future.

  • Take the soft skills into consideration

We all know how important it is to be thoughtful about one’s experiences and competencies acquired through hard learning. Nevertheless, it is not always the case with BIM as in many jobs. The employers often circle around the requirements of openness and communicating ideas accessible — these all are talents useful not only in the offices but also at home and within every communication.
