The Murder of Sayra Barros

Bethlehem, Georgia is described on its website as the “Little town under the star,” as it was named for the Bethlehem Methodist Church, established in 1796. The town boasts a magnificent Nativity Pageant every December with last year’s being no different.

It is sadly ironic what was happening shortly before that time, when Cledir Barros was overheard saying that his 8 year old little girl, Sayra, had 2 different personalities, and she was a demon. Cledir was also heard admitting that he blamed Sayra for his marital problems because she was conceived out of wedlock.

He also knew that his wife, Natalia, Sayra’s stepmother, was beating the child, yet he still pulled her out of traditional public school to be homeschooled. She was alone all day with a woman who was known by 2 case workers from the Division of Family and Children Services for beating Sayra out of anger.

On January 30, 2024, Sayra was eating her breakfast when Nataleia believed she was not eating correctly. Fueled by her anger, Nataleia spanked the girl before she grabbed a rolling pin from the kitchen cupboard and struck Sayra so hard, up to 20 times. Sayra turned white a short time later, before Nataleia grabbed the girl and probably threw her across a bed.

Reports are conflicting as some stated that she called Cledir, who told Nataleia to pray, and everything would be fine.

A second report stated that Nataleia called 2 Nigerian priests before Emergency help was contacted.

A third report stated that Cledir came home and performed CPR himself.

A fourth report stated that he did not call 911 in due time.

Sadly, Sayra was pronounced dead at the scene as soon as the medics arrived.

This sweet girl, described as kind and loving who enjoyed giving hugs, may still be alive today if the earlier case brought against the Barros’ was properly Investigated by the Division of Family and Children Services. Two employees, one not adequately trained, were fired as a result of Sayra’s death.

Nataleia was charged with Malice Murder, 2 counts of Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault and Cruelty to children in the first degree.

Cledir is charged with 2nd degree murder for failing to call 911. In addition, he is charged with 2 counts of cruelty to children, resulting in Sayra’s ongoing mental distress and leaving her with Nataleia, known for physical attacks against her.

Rest in peace, Sayra. Hopefully, justice comes for you soon.
