Bacteria feed on residual food substances on the surface of the teeth. Streptoccus mutans, cavity bacteria start to multiply and acidifies the tooth surface by discharging polysaccharide carbohydrate gluten, EPS (Extracellular Polymeric Substances). In this process, biofilms are made. Biofilms are also called as polymeric matrix. The duration of the biofilms can take up to 48 hours to develop on the surface of the tooth, although the duration can depend on the carrier. Full process takes about 3 months to completely settle and when seated it becomes difficult to treat with antibiotics. As the tooth acidifies, the acid erodes the tooth, dropping the pH to 5.5. Meanwhile Porphyromonas gingivalis, bacterium causing periodontal disease to grow and exacerbates the tooth.

To prevent biofilms, brushing teeth is important after the meal. Brush within 20 minutes and rinse as much as possible. Brush gently with a little force between the teeth and the gum. It is important to brush thoroughly between the surfaces and sides of the teeth. Especially, the upper and lower teeth should be brushed 3 times more than the other teeth. It will take about 3–5 minutes.

Brushing the Tongue is the Last Step

The most common cause of halitosis is sulfur compounds, formed by bacteria in the oral cavity that break down the proteins. When brushing only the teeth eliminate 25% and with brushing the tongue eliminates about 80% of the total oral bacteria. The tongue has 50 kinds of bacteria including Porphyromonas gingivalis, bacterium causing periodontal disease and Streptococcus mutans, bacterium causing the cavity, up to 100 thousand to a million. Brush thoroughly, especially the center of the tongue and remove the residual toothpaste completely.

What Should be Done to Maintain Healthy Teeth?

The body becomes acidic due to the unhealthy food intake and irregular lifestyles. It is important to maintain oral alkaline environment from the accumulation of the active oxygen and bacteria. In order to prevent and eliminate the accumulation of toxin in the mouth, it is necessary to consume alkaline foods, frequently drink BIOCERA Antioxidant Hydrogen Alkaline water and brush the teeth after the meal.
