The Novelty Presidents

How President George W. Bush lead to President Donald J. Trump

Now I’m not one to hop on the bandwagon, but with circus train that has become our government I can’t help share my two cents. President Trump is a consequence of President George W. Bush’s 2 terms in office. The beginning of what I call the Novelty Presidents.

A novelty president is one who wasn’t elected based on their political merit, rather some arbitrary gimmick. The last three President’s are novelty presidents. Their gimmicks are:

  1. President Bush
  • Family legacy
  • Money

2. President Obama

  • 1st African American
  • Representing impoverished city

3. President Trump

  • Appealed to white voters
  • Huge prior media presences
  • The “anti-candidate”

The election of George W. Bush in 2000 is considered one of the most controversial of all presidential elections, thanks, in part, to the “Hanging chad conspiracy.” This brought the electoral college to the attention of the masses and began a desire amongst average Americans to abolish the college for the popular vote.

Being defeated in the popular vote by AL Gore with 500,000 more votes. Toped off by the infamous “Florida recount,” called into question the legitimacy of President Bush’s presidencies for one. But what solidified him as the first mock novelty President was his lack of public speaking abilities. Despite having the best speach writers available President Bush had the vocabulary of a 1st grader.

President George W. Also opened up the flood gates for the presidential over reach. By enacting such freedom killing laws as the Freedom of Information Act it lowered the bar and expanded the duties of the presidency without amending the Constitution or addressing Congress. These acts, executive orders, and laws paved the way for more novelty presidential candidates.

At 47 years old the fifth youngest President ever elected, President Barack Obama. Now im certain that calling President Obama a gimmick is going to get me called some special names myself but I enjoy the attention.

Why is President Barack a novelty President? His most novel characteristic is his lack of political status prior to his Presidency. While he may be a Harvard law graduate, taught at the university of Chicago, former Illinois state senator, and U.S. senator(all the reasons I voted for his first term) he didn’t do anything significant legislatively in those positions.

Obviously President Barack Obama was elected the 44th President of this country. How did he achieve this victory? To me, President Bush primed the country and prepped the political atmosphere for his 2008 win. That with a democratic strategy of exploiting socioeconomic tensions and we get Novelty President #2.

The ultimate deciding factor in getting President Obama into office is obvious, controversial, and going to get me hate mail. Being the 1st African American candidate was the deciding factor propelling him into the white house. Lets face it, RACE was just as relevant then as it is today. Being an African American candidate motivated voters, who had Barack been white, wouldn't have showed interest in the election let alone vote.

President Obama, like President Bush, has systematically circumvented Congress by implementing executive orders which are a direct violation of the Constitution.

This snowballing of Presidential over reach and blainit shiting on the Constitution by the 1st and 2nd Novelty Presidents along with the use of mass media and the all encompassing race card has lead us the this….

The most novel gimmick pseudo-president possible. President Trump!

While I disagree so far with most everything President Trump has said or done he is a result of the American Presidency set up before him. And while I’d like to hold out hope, the pattern shows it’s only going to get worse. However, President Trump simply took the Democratic mold for President Barack Obama’s 2008 win and applied it in the other direction.

President Trump with his established media presences and disturbing use of social media to create controversy launched him into a once perceived elite office. Like most Americans I too am sick of “business as usual” politics in Washington. I also believe that the Executive branch of our government should be ran by qualified Executives not career politicians. President Trump however seems as if he is on another one of his reality shows where consequeses don't effect 300 million+ Americans. Admittedly I am no expert so i hold out hope that the safe guards that our founding fathers established prevail. whether by means of law or through the right of the people to revolt. Fundamentally though we would not have a President Trump without a President Obama and we wouldn't have a President Obama without the 1st Novelty President, President W. Bush.

As I critize the former Presidents they each inherited their own set of problems. President Bush had the recession and 9/11. While his handling of all things economic or military were disastrous during 9/11 his patriotism shown proud. for that I give him credit. President Obama sold me originally on the HOPE and CHANGE. His economic climate was disastrous and by the end of his term the economy is booming! He implemented(a not well planned, thought out, effective and rushed) the beginning steps to a health care system that represents the interest of the people not the corporation. He did a lot of good for the country, but he did so at the cost of over extending his power and setting up a habit that gave us President Trump. while it is only the start of the Trump presidency so far he has taken the playbook from both previous Novelty Presidents, highlighted their faults sprinkled in some near racist rhetoric on social media and makes big bold claims without any clear plan on how such claims are to be achieved.

I know not what the future holds for this once great nation. You may disagree with my opinions and observations. You may think my claims are unfounded and our nation is in good shape and on the right path. I encourage such disagreement with me. However, if/when it becomes to much to bear to see our country, our Constitution and the principles our founding fathers set forth continue to be raped, well then I quote the Declaration of Independence:

Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed, that whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its Foundation on such Principles, and organizing its Powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.
