When Should I Put My Purple Martin House Up?

Purple Martins are migratory birds and often move to the United States in April, so the best time to put up a Purple Martin House is any time throughout the winter months up until the end of March.

However, there are a few tips and tricks you should consider to maximize your chance of attracting a Purple Martin flock to your yard:

Start Early

By putting up your Purple Martin House early, you can be sure that other bird species that arrive to similar habitats don’t crowd them out. Starting early also gives the birds plenty of time to adjust to the new environment.

Location, Location, Location

When possible, try to position your house in an open and sunny area, with a clear view of the sky. Make sure it is far enough away from trees, bushes, and structures to avoid potential predators.

Keep It Clean!

To ensure that your Purple Martin house is an attractive habitat, it is important to clean and maintain it regularly. Make sure to keep the nesting area and entrance free of debris, and replace the nesting material every year.

Finally, in order to attract and keep Purple Martins around, you’ll want to provide them with a reliable source of food. To do this, consider installing a Purple Martin feeder with live mealworms, crickets and other protein-rich food sources.

By following these tips, you will greatly increase your chances of attracting a few Purple Martin families to make your house their home. Good luck!
