Bird Watching in Tepoztlan

Today I’m going to tell you about a Bird watching tour to San Andres de la Cal, this quaint town is located at the foot of the Tepoztlan mountains, Tepoztlan is one of the most Mystic towns in Mexico, it is home to many expatriates, who came to live in Tepoztlan, many of them from the Vietnam era, it is a very nice town full of history and wonder, at the top of the Tepoztlan mountain you can find a pre columbian observatory, this was a learning place for different cultures, San andres de la Cal is just a few miles from Tepoztlan.

Our Birding site is near a watering hole, we park our van and walk about 500 yards to it, this is a birders paradise.

Bordering this water hole for any paleontology enthusiast, there are many sea shell fossils encrusted in the lime stones, also if after Bird watching you want to hike for around 30 minutes we reach a little known area were we can see ancient wall paintings, but back to bird watching, this area is a favorite of many species of birds like the west Mexican Chachalaca, rock pigeon and Inca Dove, various types of hummingbirds, like the Husky and the berylline Hummingbirds, aquatic birds, like the Blue Heron, or the Great Egret, and you can also see the Sharp Shinned Hawk, Belted Kingfisher, just to name a few of the species that visit this area.

On our last trip we counted 42 different species of birds, among them 4 species endemic of Mexico, the Happy Wren, West Mexican Chachalaca, Rofous backed Robin, and the Dusky Hummingbird, and 4 semi endemic species, Violet Crowned Hummingbird, Thick billed Kingbird, Grey Silky Flycatcher, and the Lazuli Bunting.

As you can see, this is a prime spot to get your lifers, it also offers you the chance to see fossils, as well as wall paintings in just one outing, and to top it off, after enjoing the morning bird watching, and hiking, we head to the town of Tepoztlan, to have a hearty lunch, visit the town market, the Cathedral, and the Pellicer Museum, or hike up the Mountain and visit the Tepoztlan Piramid.
