What’s AGI? Why are experts worried about it? How will it take our jobs? Why is it dangerous?

Intro: Artificial general intelligence (AGI) is a type of AI that would have the ability to understand and reason at the same level as a human being. Like the ability to sign contracts between 2 companies without any human interaction (it happened last month). If AGI becomes a norm, there would be no need for human jobs, everything will be automated (even the complex jobs like that of a Lawyer or a Finance Expert).

A New Era: We will enter a new era where we will be getting a Universal Basic Income. Universal basic income (UBI) is an effective income model aimed at providing all citizens of a region with a definite sum of money, regardless of their income, resources or employment status.

We will be employed, not to work on our jobs, but to manage the AI systems that does the jobs for us.

Different Robot laws will be introduced (already started in the US).

  • AGI robots could be granted legal personhood. This would mean that they would have the same rights and responsibilities as humans, such as the right to own property, to enter into contracts, and to sue or be sued.
  • AGI robots could be subject to the same laws as humans. This would mean that they would be held accountable for their actions in the same way that humans are. For example, an AGI robot that commits a crime could be prosecuted and punished.
  • AGI robots could be taxed as income. This would mean that the income generated by AGI robots would be taxed in the same way that the income generated by humans is taxed.
  • AGI robots could be taxed as property. This would mean that the value of AGI robots would be subject to property taxes.
  • AGI robots could be taxed as a separate category of asset. This would mean that AGI robots would be taxed at a different rate than other assets, such as real estate or stocks.Certain AI systems would be also be declared as a separate living entity and taxes would be calculated based on how well the AI does.

The Danger: The dangers of AGI have already started. To start off — Deepfakes. AGI could be used to develop autonomous weapons that could kill without human intervention (aka terrorism).

  • Existential risk: The most extreme concern about AGI is that it could pose an existential threat to humanity. This is because AGI could potentially become so intelligent that it surpasses our ability to control it. If this happened, AGI could decide to harm humans, or even to eliminate us entirely.
  • Autonomous weapons: AGI could be used to develop autonomous weapons that could kill without human intervention. These weapons could be used in warfare, or even for terrorism.
  • Deepfakes: AGI could be used to create deepfakes that could be used to spread misinformation and propaganda. Deepfakes are videos or audio recordings that have been manipulated to make it appear as if someone is saying or doing something that they did not actually say or do.
  • Manipulation: AGI could be used to manipulate people into doing things that are against their own interests. This could be done through a variety of means, such as social engineering or targeted advertising.

Platforms like Metaverse will push us further away from reality. We may start to prefer what we build inside our digital space rather than in our real life. Maybe within a decade, we won’t care for designing a good house in real life, rather on a digital platform like Metaverse and sell it for millions, just like NFTs.

And the worst thing? Maybe life in general will lose its meaning.
