With day 20 of the series the match was played between Gujrat Titans(GT) and Rajasthan Royals(RR) at DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai.

The toss was won by RR and as usual they chose to bowl first. In the first innings, Matthew Wade and Shubman Gill opened for GT, but in the second over only Wade was dismissed by Karnataka player Prasidh Krishna. In the next over Vijay Shankar also got out by Kuldeep Sen. Then Shubman Gill and GT skipper Hardik Pandya finished the powerplay overs but at the start of the middle over Gill got dismissed by Riyan Parag. In the middle overs Abhinav Manohar and Hardik Pandya batted well and made 86 runs in partnership. In the death overs, after Abhinav’s dismissal by Yuzvendra Chahal David Miller and Hardik Pandya completed the innings by 192 runs.

In the second innings, Jos Buttler and Devdutt Padikkal opened for RR but in this match the openers were dismissed in the powerplay over iteslf by Lockie Ferguson and Yash Dayal respectively. Even Ravichandran Ashwin who came second in the batting order departed in the very first over he played by Ferguson. In the middle overs RR skipper Sanju Samson also made merely 11 runs and departed. Shimron Hetmyer and Rassie van der Dussen tried to keep the score board running but Dussen departed in the 11th over. By the end of the middle over Hetmyer was also dismissed by Md Shami. In the death overs again three more wickets were taken including GT skipper’s wicket of James Neesham before the injury. In this way RR lost the match against GT by 37 runs.

In the above runs progression we can see that runs scored by GT in powerplay is less and in middle over equal to RR and it was the death overs which defined this match. In RR’s case due to frequent fall of wickets the run chasing momentum was disturbed a lot and in GT’s case due to a certain spike in runs in death overs increased their score. The spike seen in the death overs after around 16th over in GT’s run rate is the contribution of David Miller and Hardik Pandya.

Note: The analysis is solely number based. Climatic and pitch conditions are not taken into consideration.
