On the second day of the week, race to finals to started with the Qualifier 1 between Gujrat Titans(GT) led by Hardik Pandya and Rajasthan Royals(RR) led by Sanju Samson at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

The toss was won by GT and they chose to bowl first. In the first innings, Yashsavi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler opened for RR with a good start of 9 runs in first over. After few dots and a double Yash Dayal broke this opening partnership by dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal in the second over. Jos Buttler unlike his previous match form performed really well and stayed beyond powerplay. Buttler and Samson’s 68 runs in partnership played an important role as opening partnership in a match. After dismissal of Sanju Samson by Sai Kishore, Devdutt Padikkal came on strike and kept rotating strike with Buttler but he was also dismissed in the 15th over by GT skipper Hardik Pandya. In the death overs Jos Buttler who made 89 runs in 56 balls was dismissed in the final over in a run out sequence and Riyan Parag was also dismissed like that in the very next ball. At the end RR made a total of 188 runs to chase.

In the second innings, Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill opened for GT where Trent Boult got his first breakthrough by dismissing Saha at 0 in the second ball. Then Matthew Wade came on strike and completed the powerplay phase with Gill and made 72 runs in partnership. After dismissal of Gill in the 8th over, Wade was also dismissed by Obed McCoy in the 10th over. Hardik Pandya and David Miller’s partnership played an important role in chasing the target as they made 106 runs in partnership and David Miller ended the innings with three massive sixes qualifying GT straight to finals.

In the runs progression chart above we can see that both teams scored almost equal runs in powerplay and middle overs and it was GT’s consistent batting which led to their victory. RR in the first innings could have made 5–10 more runs if two players were not dismissed in the final over making a bit difficult total for GT to chase. In the middle overs as well we can see a dip in RR’s performance somewhere around 10th over after dismissal of Sanju Samson as Devdutt Padikkal was not able to give boundaries as such in the middle overs.
