The story of cryptocurrency started in August 2008 when somebody registered the domain bitcoin.org. It was used by Satoshi Nakamoto on October 31, 2008, to publish the white paper entitled “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System.”. In January 2009, the first Bitcoin was mined in Block 0, also called “genesis block”. Almost in the same time (January 8), the first version of the Bitcoin software was presented on The Cryptography Mailing list, and since that moment BTC mining began in full force.

Aside from mining, the only way to get some Bitcoins in these early days was by trading it on IRC or forums. However, the need drives innovation. The first cryptocurrency exchange went live in March 2010. It was Bitcoinmarket.com. The exchange team was developing the platform following the feedback from the Bitcointalk forum. Bitcoinmarket.com had integration with Paypal and exchanging BTC for fiat until June 4, 2011, when the exchange was cut off. It was the end of Bitcoinmarket.com and time for its successor — Mt. Gox which was handling 70% of all bitcoin trades by 2014.

Today, according to CoinMarketCap data, the oldest and cryptocurrency trading platform on the market is BitStamp. It was launched in July 2011 and operated since then. Below you can have a look at the top 15 of the oldest crypto exchanges in the world. You find there BitBay which was brought to life in February 2014.
