The Danger of Self Deception

Telling a lie is one thing, but receiving validation for a lie you tell is an entirely other animal. Receiving one validation from your mother after telling a lie about eating a cookie before dinner is one thing; telling millions of people you’ll take their care of their money as their accountant, then proceeding to launder it is a little worse, right? Different scales of deception but the notion is the same — if you lie to someone and get validation of it enough times you and your brain will start to believe that lie too.

Some people choose to view problematic situations where they’re excluded from accountability. They are usually doing this by telling themselves lies damn near every day. You know what people I’m talking about. The type of people who tell you about a problem their having in a relationship that they don’t want to be in because they other person doesn’t really care about them..but they’re afraid of being alone (which they don’t admit) so they make the reason up for them getting fucked over having to do with something external, (they were busy, they were in a bad mood, they rescheduled) when in reality this person just uses them when they see fit.

Now I know you know who I’m talking about, but I digress. People with tendencies to view situations like this are basically lying to themselves and in some ways not facing reality. imagine how dangerous a person who is a good liar could be with lying to themselves. you don’t have to be stupid to lie to yourself you can just be very convincing — that applies to yourself too! so be careful what you tell yourself, because you will end up believing it meanwhile everyone around you will wonder why you look like a plum fool.

just food for thought.
