When a movie gets you thinking
Long distance relationships
I’ve never been in one, but a few hours ago I saw the indie flick Like Crazy and it got me thinking: how do people do it? How do people have long-distance relationships?
I feel like it’s so difficult and painful, so why would people put themselves through that?
If being in a relationship means being together, that would imply physical togetherness as well as emotional togetherness, I’m assuming. But what if either of those togetherness-es isn’t there? The relationship can’t possibly be going well, or can it?
If two people (like Jacob and Anna from Like Crazy) feel so strongly about each other, are so emotionally connected, is distance really a problem?
Then again, can this long distance thing just be plain old selfishness? I mean, remember that other movie Going the Distance with Justin Long and Drew Barrymore? Where they each had their own lives and wouldn’t leave it for the other person?
Same with Boy Meets World, an episode where Mr. Feeny (yes, good ole Fee-hee-ney) confesses that he had been in (sort of) a long distance relationship with a woman in Boston, but that neither one would leave their jobs for the other (and that this went on for many years). Love is supposed to be about sacrifices, right? Right?
Don’t look at me — I have no answers! I guess I never intended to come up with one. What could possibly be the right answer when it comes to relationships anyway? I bet no one really knows. Not even Feeny knew!
As I writes this, I’m looking at a picture of a couple reunited after World War II. Imagine that — a long distance relationship where you only speak through letters and maybe one of you won’t make it out alive. Yikes.
Anyway, to all you people in long distance relationships — best of luck. I mean that. If I have issues in my relationship and we’re both right here, I can’t even imagine the sorts of issues possible if we weren’t.
I leave you with a screencap from Like Crazy, which you should watch…

Also, listen to “Long Distance” by The Naked Brothers Band. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, we should really talk about some stuff.
