Once you have selected the destination for your next vacation and paid for the plane and the hotel, you’re left with the most crucial step: deciding what you’re going to do there.

To make this process easier, I compiled a list of 24 adventures that I tried and enjoyed.

Adventures On land

1. Hiking in the jungle.

A variety of guided tours are available, allowing you to enjoy the experience without worrying about the itinerary or planning.

Recommended location: Trail to Moana Falls, on Oahu, Hawaii

2. Hiking a mountain.

This includes a nice balance of hiking and bouldering. And incredible views from the top.

Recommended location: Old Rag Mountain, Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

3. Climbing a volcano crater.

Easy hike on a gentle slope, with impressive views of the island and ocean.

Recommended location: Diamond Head Crater on Oahu, Hawaii

4. Watching the sunset from the top of a mountain.

Don’t forget to bring a picnic blanket and some food, and enjoy the view!

Recommend location: Mount Tantalus on Oahu, Hawaii

5. Enjoying a sunset on the coast.

The most popular locations attract a lot of people, so make sure to get there early in order to secure a prime spot.

Recommended location: Sunset Cliffs in San Diego

6. Quad Biking.

Discover the beauty of a national or state park on a silent and ecologically friendly quad bike.

Recommended location: Bill Baggs State Park, Florida

7. Exploring Waterfalls.

Walk or swim in the small rocky basin of a waterfall. Reef shoes are recommended.

Recommended location: Maui

8. Skiing.

Enjoy the slopes at a scenic ski resort.

9. Tubing.

If you want a similar experience to skiing without any effort, tubing is right for you. Just sit and enjoy.

10. Parasailing.

Rise into the sky from a fast-moving boat, and take in incredible views of the coast.

Recommended location: Ala Moana Blvd., Oahu, Hawaii

11. Ziplining.

Fly over the foliage with incredible views of the landscape under you.

Recommended location: The Smoky Mountains

12. Flying a plane.

Register for a flight lesson and take control of a small plane in the air.

Recommend location: International Flight Academy in Washington, DC.

13. Skydiving.

Jump from a plane attached to an instructor. He will do all the grueling work while you pose for pictures and enjoy the view.

14. Whale Watching.

Watch for whales coming up to the surface from the comfort of a boat. Don’t forget your camera.

Recommended location: San Diego, California

15. Surfing.

Not only is surfing a lot of fun, but you can start doing it without any previous experience, simply by taking a class.

Recommended location: Waikiki Beach, Oahu, Hawaii

16. Ocean Kayaking.

Rent a kayak and enjoy small ocean waves and turquoise water. For even more fun, you can kayak to some islets near the beach.

Recommended location: Kailua Beach, Oahu, Hawaii

17. River Kayaking.

Enjoy scenic views of the surrounding city or forest from the river.

Recommended location: Potomac River, Washington, DC.

18. Riding a Jet-Ski.

If you like speed, wind, and waves, this one is for you.

Recommended location: Oahu, Hawaii

19. Swimming.

The most obvious water activity. Even more obvious when the water is clean, turquoise, and filled with tropical fish.

20. Boogie Boarding.

It’s easier than surfing and less exhausting than swimming.

Recommended location: Waikiki Beach, Oahu, Hawaii.

21. Shark Cage Diving.

If you ever wanted to get close to sharks in their natural environment, cage diving is right for you.

Recommended location: North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii

22. Swimming with Turtles.

Observe turtles in their natural environment. Keep a reasonable distance.

Recommended location: Oahu, Hawaii

23. Snorkeling with Dolphins.

There is nothing better than watching a group of dolphins swim in the depths just under you.

Recommended location: Oahu, Hawaii

24. Exploring an ocean cave.

Swim to a cave. Enjoy the big black rocks. Meet fish and marine animals on the way.

Recommended location: La Jola, California
