Or how to make practicing Salsa at home easy and fun.

Welcome to the Salsa Practice App!

When I tried to practice salsa steps at home, in between the classes, I found it difficult to focus on my movements while trying to remember the next steps and choreography. Simply following my instructor’s guidance during class was much easier. To recreate this experience at home, I created the Salsa Practice app.

Here are some tips to get the most out of it.

1. 🕺Solo vs Couple Mode

The app currently supports three levels:
Absolute Beginner
Beginner Level 1
Beginner Level 2

For each level, you can choose to practice Solo or Couple moves:

  • Solo Mode → Focus on footwork, styling, and body movement.
  • Couple Mode → Work on lead-follow technique and partner coordination.

Switching modes is easy — just use the tab bar at the top to toggle between Solo and Couple practice.

Each level includes separate Solo and Couple combinations, giving you the flexibility to train individually or with a partner. You can pick any combination or go through all the moves from a specific level at your own pace.

2. 👣Practice Mode vs Footwork Mode

Some combinations have both Footwork and Practice modes.

Some combinations offer both Footwork and Practice modes, giving you flexibility in how you train.

👣 Footwork Mode

Perfect if you don’t feel ready to dance a combination in real-time. Instead of the app looping through beats at a set speed, you’ll tap “Next” to advance beat by beat. The app will show the correct foot position at each beat, giving you all the time you need to adjust before moving to the next step.

⏱️ Practice Mode:

The main mode of the app. It lets you dance at your chosen speed (BPMs), looping through the combination like in a real dance session.

3. 🔄Create and Save Custom Routines

You can easily create your own routines to practice. Image by Author.

The app lets you create and save your own dance routines, making practice more structured and personalized.

Getting Started:

1️⃣ Tap “Routines” in the bottom menu to view your saved routines.
2️⃣ Tap a routine to start practicing.
3️⃣ To edit a routine, tap the pencil icon in the top right corner.

Creating a New Routine:

➕ Tap the “+” button at the bottom right.
👤 Choose between Solo routines (for individual practice) or Couple routines (for partner practice).
📝 Add any steps, in any order, to create your own unique combination.

Once saved, your routine will be ready to practice anytime!

This feature is perfect if you want to drill a specific sequence from class or develop your own favorite combos.

4. ⏩Adjust Your Speed (Auto-Increase Available!)

You can adjust the speed of training, and make the speed auto increase on every loop. Image by Author.

You can adjust the training speed to match your comfort level and even set it to increase automatically after each loop.

  • Set your preferred speed (BPMs) using the slider in Settings.
  • Enable Auto-Increase → The app will increase the speed by 10 BPM after each loop, gradually challenging you.

This feature helps you progress at your own pace, improving both speed and control over time.

5. 🎶Customize instruments volume

With individual volume control for instruments, you can personalize the mix to match your style.

  • Adjust Clave, Conga, Cowbell, Maracas, Bass, Bongo, and Timbales.
  • Mix and match to hear the rhythm that works best for you.
  • Find the perfect balance to stay on beat and refine your musicality.

You’ll find the instrument volume settings in Settings.

I hope these few tips will help you enjoy the Salsa Practice App even more! Don’t hesitate to leave a comment if you have any questions or feedback. Or a new combo you want to have in the app. If you haven’t installed the app yet, it’s available for free here. (Check here for the Spanish version)
