Why do people seem to like me more when I have a tan?

After spending the weekend on boat in sunny Seattle, I returned home with apparently a nice tan.

Many people told me that the tan was nice. I wasn’t really tanned, I was what I considered more burnt. But they still said my tan looked nice.

People were seemingly nicer to me on the street and in shops and restaurants. People at work were most-definitely nicer to me. So were people at the gym.

Why is this? Because a tan equates a chill person of leisure? Maybe an indicator that someone is a traveler?
