This article, written by a peace officer, though enlightening based on issues on his home turf in New Hampshire, and a place which I have visited regular for work, completely misses the point. Peace or Police Officers are representatives of the community, paid for by the community, and should leave their biases at home, regardless of whether they have families or not. If you “choose” to become a public servant, then “choose” to serve the public and quit whining about having a family to go home to. If those “very important” factors, like having a family to go home to affect your decision making as a cop, then turn in your badge because your fears will lead to irrational behavior, just like what happened in Mn and N.O. I get the basis of family, but if you’re afraid of your life at every single traffic stop, that job isn’t for you. It’s a dangerous job, but don’t pretend murder, or your take on probable cause is justified because of what you see or feel. Every single incident is singular, so let not your take on history affect your use of force.
