Not only are stereotypes beneficial, they are neccesary. We can only understand the world around by us by simplifying it. Stereotypes are a tool that facilitate our understanding of the world. Issues with stereotypes only arise when people choose to neglect specific characteristics of an individual in favor of extreme stereotypical characterization or when “us versus them” takes over how people view the world. Trying to break down stereotypes may fix these problems, but this is only treating a symptom. The problem behind these caustic views is a lack of focus in nuances of an individual. Coloring all stoereotypes as bad and ignoring the utility in them will not treat the root problem of a lack of nuance in thinking.
