Egypt where I live does the exact same thing — and with the same arguments. Bottom line here has to be that it all boils down to short sighted greed instead of looking at the bigger picture.

The security argument is not valid, since it’s very easy to bypass this and the decentralized blockchain based solutions going live now are virtually untraceable.
