Why YOU should go to IUP!!

Hello. My name is Kaydence DeHaven. I am 19 years old and I attend Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Some things about me are that I am majoring in Nursing for my remaining years here at IUP. My experience here at IUP has been well. You get to meet a whole bunch of new people. College is very different from high school, but in my opinion, IUP would be the best place to choose. There are so many activities here and so many people to meet. In this essay, I will be talking about when I knew I was coming to IUP, the first day I moved into my dorm room, and lastly what I am majoring in!

Early morning in Fall on IUP Campus

Where did I end up going for college? Well, I had put no thought into knowing where I will going for the longest time. When I was a sophomore, I started thinking about the options. I had thought about places like Penn State, Slippery Rock University, Waynesburg University, and lastly Westminister College. I had nothought in IUP until I met my boyfriend back in 2022. He is a year older than me, so he was already attending IUP at the time. The first time visiting IUP was in the fall 2 years ago, and it was beautiful. Another thing I noticed while visiting, people are very friendly here. I knew from that visit I was set on IUP. My senior year I started eliminating other colleges and went straight for IUP, mostly because my boyfriend is going here. When I got accepted, I was so happy. Now in my second semester of freshman year, this was definitely the best choice for me.

Now, as we all know, moving into a new place with a completely different environment can be very stressful. Moving into my dorm room was stressful but also emotional. Overall, the day was good, but it was very jam-packed its things to get done before a certain time. I would have to say decorating and bringing everything upstairs took the longest. After setting up my room with my parents and boyfriend, we went out to eat at Hoss Steak House. We took forever to eat since no one wanted to leave me here alone. When we went back to drop me off at my dorm, that’s when the emotions started to roll in. When I was giving everyone a hug, tears were rolling down our faces. When they left, I stuck in my room alone with no one to talk too. Thankfully I had an amazing roommate that made sure I was okay, but it was still a hard transition.

Lastly, I am majoring in nursing. I would have never thought in a million years that I would be a nursing major. My first option was criminology. Since I was little, I’ve always wanted to be a police office or a bails-bond officer. But now that I think about it, I don’t think it would have been a good fit for me. Helping people and making sure they are okay is my goal in life, and nursing is the right path for me. After I graduate, I want to move to Florida and become a hospice nurse. I chose being a hospice nurse because giving people the best last moment of their life is very important to me. I want to make sure they have for filled their life before they pass away peacefully.

In conclusion, IUP was the best fit for me. I have met a lot of new people here that are now my friends, I have found the major I’ve been wanted to do for a while, and I can’t tell others that are moving in my experience on my first day here. Helping people is very important and its good to communicate to there’s how it went for their peers and what to expect.
