Ah, focus. . . I remember that concept. I think. It’s probably why I still prefer “real” books — no distractions on the page.
Generally, though, my problem isn't inability to focus so much as inability to keep track of the multiple things I do have to keep an eye on during the day. I may have 5–6 “projects” going on that need deep attention, but there are also the more mundane things like e-mail, server status, long-running tasks I’ll need to get back to when the current step completes, and so on.
Which for me means two 24" monitors, with multiple windows visible — or at least partly visible. It’s true that it’s not really multi-tasking, it’s sequential. And it’s true that it’s deleterious to intense focus on one thing. But they don’t pay me to do one thing. They pay me to keep multiple things running like they should. And if I get too involved in say, reading an interesting article, I’m liable to miss the necessary distractions.
