It’s Black History Month and Black Girls CODE is thrilled to provide you a glimpse into the future through our #FutureTechBoss Series!

For the past seven years, Black Girls CODE has empowered girls of color all across the country to become the future leaders, innovators, and creators in the technology ecosystem. This Black History Month, we are excited to give some of our Tech Divas an opportunity to share their stories with the world; to shine a light on their hopes, dreams, and aspirations for the future via our #FUTURETECHBOSS campaign.

We hope this campaign will serve as motivation and empowerment for the future generation of tech divas and show the world that black girls code and do so much more. As we center our tech divas as #FUTURETECHBOSSES we give notice to the world that the future is on the horizon and our girls are ready to take the reins.

Meet Sasha Williams, an Oakland High School senior, who has been coding with Black Girls CODE since the age of 12!

Why Do you LOVE Black Girls CODE?

At the early age of 12, when I first started Black Girls Code, I learned how to code. Soon after, I learned how to combine my imagination, creativity, and other interests with STEAM which opened a world of possibilities that I’m so grateful for. This is the reason why I LOVE Black Girls Code. Black Girls Code is where I developed my love for STEAM; Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math as well as motivation to advocate for the need of young Black girls in STEM and Tech. Black Girls Code is not just a place where I can learn how to code, but also a place where I can use my creativity to be innovative, while surrounded by other young Black girls who have the same interest as me which is code.

If you were a Superhero what powers would you have?

If I was a Superhero the superpowers I would have would be Time Manipulation, Teleportation, and Omnilingualism. Some days I feel like I don’t have enough time to finish everything I want to do. With the power of Time Manipulation, I can accomplish my goals, as well as help stop tragic events from happening in our world. With the power of Teleportation, I can easily travel the world, experience new cultures, and help others along the way. By being able to transport, I can bring resources across the world to people who desperately need it. And with the power of Omnilingualism, I am able to communicate with people of all languages. By having this power I can be a hero for all, not just a select group of people.

What is your dream job?

My dream job is all of the above: Multimedia Producer, Film Director, Activist, Influencer, Actress, Video Game Designer, and Entrepreneur.

Who would you consider a STEM Role Models?

Marie Curie, Katherine Johnson, and Kimberly Bryant.

What does it mean to you to be a black girl who codes? Describe why the Black Girls CODE mission is important to you.

In today’s world, there are not that many STEM women role models, let alone many Black women STEM role models. Black Girls Code mission: “is to introduce programming and technology to a new generation of coders, coders who will become builders of technological innovation and of their own futures” and because of that, it is really important to me that I am a young Black girl who codes. By being a young Black girl who codes I know that I am intelligent, powerful, smart, bold, strong, and creative. It makes me feel like I can show other Black girls, that they are also smart, creative, and powerful young women who can create and build their own futures. Black Girls CODE has introduced me to programming and technology which allowed me to develop a passion and love for STEAM and I know with that passion I am a Future Tech Boss.

What is one piece of advice you would give young girl interested in Tech?

One piece of advice I would give to a young girl interested in Tech is to not let anyone tell you, “you can’t.” Through life, many people will try to stop you, or tell you no, because you’re a woman, but as long as you believe in yourself and work hard, you can create your own future with endless possibilities. By believing in your own worth and power, you can become whatever you want, even your own Future Tech Boss.

What is on your playlist right now?

I love music of all genres, but some artist that I consciously listen to are Jon Bellion, Childish Gambino, Bryce Vine, & Chloe X Halle.

If you could have dinner with any three people in the world (living or deceased) who would it be and why?

If I could have dinner with any three people in the world, it would be Yara Shahidi, Oprah Winfrey, and Kamala Harris. I consider each of these women as strong role models in my life. Each are strong Black women whom I believe are taking the world by storm. I find their passion to fight against injustice so inspiring. I also find each of their careers paths so unique to who they are, which makes me believe that I can create a feature unique to who I am as a person. Being able to have dinner with these women, and hearing their stories from their perspectives would be one of the best conversations in the world.

What excites you?

What excites me most in the world is my passions for social justice, STEAM, and visual storytelling. Over the past 5 years, these passion have become a big part of my life and are what motivates me to get up in the morning. By furthering and evolving my passion I know that I can build a future that I am proud of as well as makes a difference. Being a high school senior, I know the next step in my future is college — another thing that really excites me. I’m excited to graduate and start a new chapter in life wherever it may be.

What keeps you up at night?

Something that keeps me up at night is storytelling. When I’m not doing homework, I’m either watching Netflix, playing a video game, reading a book, or writing a storying. Storytelling is a huge passion of mine and I consider it a hobby. By playing a game or watching a movie, I immerse myself into a whole new world with different characters and dilemmas. Because the World is so fascinating I usually don’t get to bed until 2:00 a.m.
