Journey From Personal Trainer to Software Developer — (week 1)
Black Man Coding
I’m late in posting this, the following was actually written on Sunday, July 16th.
i just finished the Basic Prep Course with The Viking Code School in 58 hours over the course of 10 days. So far so good! I’ve learned, in that time, there will be a bit of an adjustment in the manner I need to process information. I’m happy to say they do perform a decent job in helping that adjustment occur.
With each section, they have taught the overall theory of the subject matter, then slowly relay more detail about the topic. Anytime you may start to think ‘how does this relate to software engineering?’, they bring you around back to the overall theory and help you see how everything relates.
The first section of the course centers around the basics to web development. It compared and contrasted web designers and web developers; the difference between front end, back end, and full stack developers. They also gave an in-depth lesson on using the command line, which utterly blew me away, because I haven’t used the command line since DOS back in the 90’s. I grew up in the late 80’s, around 7 and 9 years old at that point, using DOS commands in order to play games such and Kings Quest on our computer. I haven’t had to use a command line since Microsoft finally moved away from DOS and various PC games did as well. Wow…memories.
Back to the program!
After the command line lesson, then there is some downloading and installing of various software which will be used later in the course and then a final project involving uploading into GitHub from the command line.
The next two sections about web design basics and web engineering followed the same process as. They teach the high level theory of everything and then begin to break it down, but in web engineering basic you begin to see why. Breaking down all concepts into smaller components is exactly what is done by programmers.
We believe in creating complete engineers, not just trained code monkeys. -The Viking Code School
One week in, and I have no doubt I will be a complete engineer by the end of the program. I’m pleased with what I’ve learned so far. Next is HTML and CSS which I should finish by Sunday.
Thanks for reading!
