How Bunq Blew My Mind!
Being a Product guy, whenever you try something new you can’t help but review your experience, and try to reverse engineer the thinking of the Product team behind it.
Bunq, the internationally active mobile bank, blew my mind….
It blew it that much, after my sign up experience I had no other choice but to message Chief Product Officer expressing how amazing it was (I’m expecting his inbox should be full of these)
But first…a little back story.
I’ve recently moved to Amsterdam from New Zealand. NZ Banking is pretty straight forward, and a majority of it is self service which is amazing…but there are still some experiences that leave you wanting something better.
I managed to have an easy immigration path set up for me by my employer and a great expat service. This included getting a bank account with ABN AMRO.
To get my account, the expat service had to book an appointment before I arrived in the country. Before that, I needed to have my BSN (Citizens Number) which was thankfully all set up with for me as well.
I had to do the usual thing of waiting for my bank card to arrive in the post, but I also had to wait for this new thing I’ve never heard of called an E-dentifier. It looked like an old high school calculator. It ended up being the bane of my banking life.
It never arrived, and without it, I was crippled in my ability to bank online. For any website that doesn’t open my ABN AMRO banking app to make a payment (Which were many), I needed it. To change my address online I needed it…..To do so many simple things….I NEEDED IT!
This is where the Product guy in me sees an outdated business constraint causing such a huge pain for customers.
I got so frustrated that I began seeking a better way. Along come Bunq to answer my call.
It took 10 mins from downloading their app to having an account set up. The identification process required no forms, and I talked to absolutely no-one. As an added bonus, I can Tap and Pay with my phone as I wait for my card to arrive.
The cherry on top. I don’t have a F%@$’n piece of s%$t E-dentifer ruining my life anymore.
How the Product Team at Bunq managed to jump leaps and bounds over any other bank I have worked with is insane! Especially in the regulated environment they operate in. I NEED TO TALK WITH THIS TEAM AND LEARN!!!!!
What has Bunq done for me? Not only has it improved my quality of life in 10 minutes, but it has inspired me as a Product guy. It now makes me want to say “Get Bunq’d” to business constraints that don’t make sense today, and the people that hold onto them.
