Thanks for your comment, i went in to find that codesandbox changed some configuration to prevent catching errors.
I was able to copy/paste the code into CODEPEN and its working as expected.

Thanks for responding, I think you’re possibly mistaking the intent of the article. I want people to learn react before they dive nose-first into redux.
This article is not trying to achieve what Redux’s connect does, its just a basic pattern for abstracting components for the purpose of managing state.
