Svetlana, thank you for the history lesson. Too many people want to be outraged by the five second sound bites or trigger tweets as opposed to taking some time to delve into the actual events of the time.

We’re convulsing ourselves to a similar degree over here in Canada with our Native people. Their present conditions are deplorable due to the Indian Act which has essentially remained unchanged for at least 150 years. They resist assimilation by the ‘White Man’ which is why legislative reform continuously stalls out. I can see why they don’t want to lose their culture but it has morphed into crippling unemployment, rampant obesity and medical problems, and lost youth to suicide, depression, and substance abuse. Attempts over the decades to help have resulted in a PC revisionist view of Reconciliation where it has been very difficult to hammer out solutions with people who permanently have a victim label. Of course, if you have a contrary view or genuine criticism of the process, you’re labelled as racist.

My ‘No Balance’ Medium article goes into some recent examples of the PC culture around the issue.
