Destruction is easier than creation. The Internet is much more easily used as a propaganda machine than an encyclopedia or a telescope. Facebook proves that even when disembodied and placed in entirely fake social environment, human social behavior does not progress.

The battles fought today are still over who gets to be the central authority. I don’t have any personal belief that any central authority can be benign, but it doesn’t matter. No matter how democratizing a technology can be, the biggest powers in the world aren’t fighting for democracy, they’re fighting for control, and they have no trouble enlisting media-savvy hackers to do their work.
