Best Practices: Challenges and Trivia
Maximizing Success and Engagement

Know Your Strategy
A well-thought-out and creative strategy is the key to maximizing fan engagement success. Past experience with several tennis tournaments, ranging from ATP 250 to ATP Masters 1000 (as well as dozens of colleges and minor league baseball teams) has shown the unrivaled power of Challenges and Trivia.
The More the Merrier
First things first: There is no such thing as too many Challenges and Trivia. The more Challenges and Trivia you create for each tournament day, the more fans you will attract. They will stay in the app longer and be more engaged.
If you are trying to maximize the time spent in your app and want to see fan engagement numbers skyrocket, 5 Challenges and Trivia a day simply doesn’t cut it. Most success is seen when 20, 25 and maybe even 30 unique Challenges and Trivia are scheduled out for each tournament day. Heck, make it 35. The bottom line is this: you can’t skimp on Challenges and Trivia if you want to see fan engagement soar! During non-event days, Challenges and Trivia are just as important. Get fans engaged early and keep them in the app once the tournament is all said and done!

Spread ’Em Out
Just like poker, you want to play your cards right, not all at once. 30 different Challenges and Trivia sounds like a lot upon first glance, but it’s necessary to keep your fan engagement high all day. You can’t line up all Challenges and Trivia at 8:00AM and expect fans to be just as engaged at 8:00PM. Keep ’em coming, but don’t forget to spread ’em out!
Sound like a lot? No one said you couldn’t repurpose content! Fans come and go and so can your Trivia and Challenges! Reuse but don’t overuse!
Get Ahead by Thinking Ahead!
Always be thinking about what type of content you would like to see in your Fan Stream. Challenges give you increased control over what content will be filling the Fan Stream because every time a Challenge is completed by a fan, their submission is posted to the Fan Stream for everyone to see. That means your job is to design Challenges that would not only excite fans but would also fill the Fan Stream with content you want them to see!
Sponsored Challenges/Trivia and On-Site Activation
Challenges and Trivia offer brand new, highly valuable avenues to increased exposure for your most valuable sponsors and partners: “Snap a selfie cooling off with a Coca-Cola!” or “What year did Babolat begin producing tennis racket strings?” Don’t shy away from giving your sponsors a little extra attention!
Challenges and Trivia also serve a valuable purpose when it comes to on-site activation. Curated Challenges and Trivia, paired with push notifications, can drive fans to specific areas of interest or different sponsored locations around the event. Take a look at our Push Notification Best Practices to see how you can optimize your push strategy.
You Gotta Be Quicker Than That!
The power of exclusivity is never lost or forgotten in the best fan engagement strategies. Utilize our timed Quick Challenges and Trivia to incentivize immediate engagement. Push fans to quickly complete a task or answer a question, only offering points to those who do so within a certain timeframe. Want to find out who your biggest fans are? This is a surefire way to do just that.
Get Creative But Know Your Audience
Your creative approach to Challenges and Trivia has the potential to take your fan engagement to new heights! Don’t take the cookie-cutter approach. Make it fun. Make it challenging. Make it exciting.
When building out your strategy, stay authentic, stay true to your brand and let the Challenges and Trivia elevate the tournament that your fans fell in love with.
