A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON OVER-SATURATION

We might think over-saturation is the problem…

What if It’s not?

The average person has 6 out of 10 unopened emails daily, does not see up to 75% of the content from accounts they actually follow online, and do not use up to 50% worth of their online subscription packages. (I.e Netflix, prime, etc)

Why?

oversaturation.

As an enthusiast, I’m constantly looking to be put on to niche designers and just bare “cool stuff”.

But it appears as though the “cool niche stuff” is constantly being shoved to the far end of the marketing ladder and suppressed by the more promoted stuff online.

Side bar: do you know you’re literally not in control of the stuff you interact with online now?

We only see the most promoted content from the brands and companies that put out the most content consistently. (Like that you-tube ad on wanting to be a stem professional).

That being said, we must consider that we actually want to have access to our interests.

So let’s not throw the whole idea of oversaturation in the mud.

I mean, imagine not being able to watch your favorite British shows because you’re in Kenya?

Sure, our Timeline might occasionally get crowded with stuff we didn’t really sign up for, but your feed is still predominantly things you find Interesting, based on the algorithm and your following.

and even outside social media, greater access to just about everything has been very helpful in making the world a global village.

We cannot fight over saturation, we are only going to be given more access, there will be more ad agencies and even more marketing professionals for more brands, more artists, more content creators…

More everything.

There’s a saying that you cannot stop birds from flying but you can stop them from laying eggs on your head.

I think that applies here.

For artists, creators, “creatives” (I’m really getting weary of that term), and any kind of manufacturer in any form.

Do not worry about how many clothing brands there are or how many writers are publishing books everyday, or how many content creators are popping up. If you’ve genuinely got something to say (or not), maybe you just like the field and think you can make money from it.

By all means, go for it, and see no one but yourself.

As for the consumer, consume “with your full chest”, develop your taste.

Consume responsibly of course, but by all means, consume.

Because good consumption will only make you healthier.

Think of it this way, we now have more to choose from, more than has ever been.

Don’t like that app? , try a new one.

I heard Spotify is losing stars in the court of public opinion, there’s you-tube music, deezer, boomplay, heck you can even go back to iTunes.

Don’t like that newsletter? Subscribe to a new one.

I can relate to the struggle however, it’s like walking into a jeans store with over a thousand jeans to select from, it’s overwhelming.

In conclusion, Oversaturation isn’t the problem, decision making is.

Let me know your thoughts on this, contrasting views, comments, etc
