In the beginning was the One —
Possibly still alive —
But it’s not likely.
We eat each other to assuage
Our feelings.

Religion, it has been said,
Is a window on the past.
Not so;
It is a mirror,
And so shows us how we each, in our heart of hearts,
Began.

I have never had success herding,
Nor riding it home;
Rather, I am the ox, and flinch at the master.

Sound is an artifact
of living on a planet with a gaseous atmosphere.
Who do physicists think they’re fooling?

Could one but lay their hands upon a god,
One might flay him, chop his muscle fine;
Stuff it in his smooth tanned skin and bury it.
After a time, of course, he would burst forth again;
But would he be then angry,
Having given birth to his own immaculate being?

A smooth stone may slay the giant,
Yea, though in the shadow of our Father we walk.
We do not see footprints.
