Building a team and a slow future
If it’s re-tweeted, it has to be a good thing, right?
That’s my line of thought as I sit on my bed earlier in the day, with my laptop poised on very hot sheets from its heat, and my DVR playing Grimm in front of me. My earphones are keeping track of my Twitter stream, as tweets flood in from all walks of the hash-tag.
I know that I am undertaking something that I have never even dreamed I’d be doing, but I think that it’s a good thing I am doing.
I’ve been a journalist for a short while, and I have learned many things from my adventures. I’ve learned what to learn from and when I should learn it, as with my hilarious Chicago Tribune interview I had last year.
Truth be told, I have absolutely no idea what I am doing on the publishing side of things but that’s where the adventure comes in, I am certain.
I have been graciously looking at application after application, and otherwise, and I feel really good about the direction where we’re headed.
I know that our publication will be something unique, and I will be honored to give people a chance to be a part of a different gaming magazine.
I have been discussing my worries with my partner as I stand in front of the mirror and brush my teeth while wondering where in the world we will end up. It’s fun to feel confident about the future but when you have a mouth full of Crest, you have to return to the present soon.
“I have a question.” I mumble before spitting. My best friend, Jamaal, is also brushing his teeth beside me.
“I have an answer, and another tweet for you. Your site is gaining popularity on Twitter! Isn’t that amazing?”
I think it’s more amazing that he can tolerate bubble gum toothpaste while saying sentences.
“I don’t know how you can tolerate that awful stuff… Anyway, it’s about me, and this whole thing…” a beep from my laptop interrupts me. I rinse and hurry over to hear the message that has been left in my Facebook inbox. It’s from a Jason, and he is the CEO of an advertising company. Jamaal tells me that he’s an African-American gentlemen with very nice eyes. I, however, am amazed at the message. He wants my personal email to discuss a few things regarding joining the magazine. I don’t reply for a while. I sit and reflect about the future a bit before I turn around to find Jamaal grinning at me, holding a PS4 controller in his hand.
“Want to play a bit of MGS?” I’m guessing he sees something in my face because he takes me into a long hug. “You look worried.”
“Do you think I should be doing this? Or do you think someone else should have started this with more experience?”
“Possibly, but, it’s your fault for starting something that could be really great. A gaming magazine for the underdogs, the minorities, the little gamers… it’s your fault for doing great things.”
I smile and pick up a PS3 controller. “You know what? I want to play Kingdom Hearts instead while I reflect… and level up.”
He gives me a small kiss on the cheek. “I think that’s a good idea, champ!”
