As the blockchain industry grows at an exponential rate, so does the demand for talent to fill in positions needed at startups, DAOs, and many other organizations. Every day we see different people from different groups looking for talent to hire for their projects and would often find themselves with no response.

It’s not like people are trying to be rude and not respond, but the talent pool in this space is just so small and is not growing at a fast enough pace to keep up with this industry’s growth. There is so much untapped talent in the world and the main bottleneck for this situation is exposure and education. As cliché as it may sound sometimes, but we’re still early. Most of the world isn’t even exposed to crypto yet and for those who are, aren’t educated enough about this industry to even want participate. It just takes a little push and once they’re down the rabbit hole, they can’t resist the urge to take advantage of the plethora of job opportunities.

Enter the Blockchain Student Society (BSS) a non profit organization geared towards on-ramping students, staff, and the community into this space as safely as possible.

We aspire to build a network of Universities to help funnel talent into this space and for this semester we started with Lamar University. As of writing this article, this past semester was the very first semester that BSS was formed and so much was accomplished during that time.

Here’s a list of we’ve accomplished so far:

  • Currently have 217 members in the Discord.
  • Currently have 232 followers across Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn (this needs to be improved).
  • Acquired 1 sponsor, the Feisty Doge NFT ($NFD) to support our mission.
  • Hosted 6 events last semester.
  • Hired a graphic designer to create a legitimate logo for BSS.
  • Gave out about $160 worth of free BTC to students (this value is based on the current price of BTC when giving it out)
  • Recruited 2 interns from overseas to help create content for us.
  • Writing this Medium article lol

Now here’s a list of what we are currently working on:

  • Official website being developed by students
  • Establishing core team including student developers, content creators, recruitment, community managers, artists, and graphic designers
  • Establishing a Notion board to streamline productivity and to hit KPIs at higher rate
  • Establishing share calendar to have a set schedule for the new semester
  • Finish preparing for our pilot course launch
  • Began progressing our roadmap

Some other things that isn’t included on this roadmap are:

  • Setting up a multi-signature wallet to hold BSS funds where the community can have a vote on what to do with them
  • Obtaining an ENS address for the wallet
  • Establishing a national chapter to help coordinate the different smaller chapters
  • BSS Merch
  • BSS NFT passes to help raise capital and provide holder a benefits like early access or discounts to events

Our blockchain 101 course is just the initial step to get students, staff, and the community more involved with the crypto space. Sure they can find this stuff online but it always helps to have a face to face interaction where live questions can be answered. Getting them using crypto and exploring Defi or NFT’s is the first step to getting them on boarded. When they come to our discord server they will have the opportunity to contribute in a very meaningful way. We hope to become a sandbox environment where anyone can come to learn, build their skills, and become a contributor in our space.

We just want to say thank you to everyone who has supported us along the way to help us get started especially Dr. Jane Liu, a Computer Science professor from Lamar University, and the $NFD community who has shown us so much love and support on twitter.

Feisty Doge meme

What’s so cool about them is that NFD (Feisty Doge NFT) is an ERC-20 token that is backed by an NFT of one of the original Doge memes. It is the first Doge meme to be fractionalized, allowing more people to have partial ownership over this high valued internet cultural meme. The NFT was purchased and then fractionalized by crypto investor and NFT collector Path (@cryptopathic) who has allowed a community to form around the project and to be run by them. Thank you NFD community for being our first supporters in this space.
