BlockMesh to make mobile more accessible for all

BlockMesh, a cost-free communication platform

In 2016, for the first time in history, more people accessed the Internet via mobile than via laptops or desktop computers. Smartphone users quickly get used to being connected to the Internet wherever they are. An increase in mobile Internet coverage and data consumption has positive effects on the economy according to a recent study by Deloitte [1]. In particular, a 10% increase in mobile penetration results in 4.2 percentage points growth of a country’s total factor productivity, while doubling of mobile data use leads to the growth of GDP per capita by 0.5 percentage points. Accessible mobile Internet gradually becomes one of the pillars of the modern economy.

However, mobile Internet is not universally affordable around the world. While the cost of running a smartphone can account for more than 50% of monthly income throughout the African continent [2], the most expensive countries for mobile data are Canada, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic and the Netherlands [3]. Consequently, in many countries, mobile users consume less data as artificial barriers to faster economic growth are created.

At BlockMesh, our mission is to drastically reduce the mobile data cost around the world. In an era of information being the most valuable asset, we believe in making communication more affordable as the key to universal growth. We are creating a genuinely decentralized communication network, where users can communicate and stay independent from cellular network providers. The coverage will follow the users, and not the other way around. Thanks to blockchain technology, this goal is realistic.

BlockMesh started in 2015 as a mesh network provider. A mesh network is a group of devices passing information from one to another until the recipient is reached. Essentially, blockchain enables us to reward users for supporting the network and brings our end-goal closer.

All data sent through our network will be absolutely cost-free. In case the mesh connection isn’t strong enough in a particular area, users may use ordinary cellular data. That’s where the Mesh Token comes in. Users will get Mesh Tokens (MESH) for every MB of data that passes through their mobile device. MESH can be used for peer-to-peer payments inside the network, but most importantly, users will be able to buy mobile data at any mesh hotspot for a fraction of the typical cellular data price. Thus, we have a potent incentive for our users: the stronger the mesh network, the less they have to pay for data, and at some point, they won’t have to pay at all!

In developing countries, while driving the data costs down, BlockMesh network will free up a huge part of users’ income, unlocking the entrepreneurial potential and generating new pockets of growth for the world economy. In more developed parts of the world, BlockMesh will become a worthy competitor to established cellular data providers, which in turn will boost the overall quality of services and drive the data prices down.

If you would like a deep-dive into the technology behind BlockMesh, check out our whitepaper at www.blockmesh.io. To kick start the adoption of MESH and to speed up the development of its platform, BlockMesh is holding a token sale on February 28, 2018. Though only a milestone in our roadmap, it is a great time to join BlockMesh on our journey to the world of cost-free communication.
