This victory is based on the 2019 version of GMTI (Global Muslim Travel Index) which was announced by the CEO of CrescentRating Fazal Bahardeen and also halaltrip.com at the Pullman Hotel Jakarta, Tuesday (09/04).
“After joining GMTI, this year, Indonesia should be proud because it was finally able to rank first in the world’s halal tourism, along with Malaysia, with a total score of 78,” Fazal stated.
In addition to Indonesia and Malaysia, the ranking ranking of world halal tourism GMTI version was won by Turkey in third place (score 75), Saudi Arabia in fourth place (score 72), and United Arab Emirates in fifth (score 71). Other countries included in the top 10 of the world’s halal tours include Qatar (score 68), Morocco (score 67), Bahrain (score 66), Oman (score 66), and Brunei Darussalam (score 65).
“I hope this achievement will spur other tourist destinations in Indonesia to immediately develop halal tourism in their respective regions, because we are able, Indonesia is capable and feasible to be known to the world,” said Minister of Tourism Arief Yahya.
Development of 10 National Priority Halal Destinations in 2018 which refer to GMTI standards, including: Aceh, Riau and Riau Islands, West Sumatra, DKI Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java (Malang Raya), Lombok, and South Sulawesi (Makassar and surrounding areas).
In 2019, strengthening of halal tourism destinations was carried out by adding the participation of 6 regencies and cities in the 10 priority areas of the Halal Destinations, namely Tanjung Pinang City, Pekanbaru City, Bandung City, Bandung Regency, West Bandung Regency, and Cianjur Regency.
The GMTI 2019 data shows that until 2030, the number of Muslim tourists is projected to reach 230 million worldwide.
