Our Favorite Blogging Tools Of 2016

It doesn’t matter who you are, crafting an effective and engaging blog post from start to finish requires a lot of work, and no one appreciates that more than us at BlogMutt. Even as content connoisseurs, it still takes a lot of time and effort on the part of our entire team to deliver the high-quality content you see and enjoy everyday on our blog.
And like you and your team, we’re busy. As such, we’re constantly on the lookout for tools and tricks that make our blogging efforts faster, easier, and more productive. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of our favorite blogging tools from the BlogMutt office.
Übersuggest
If you’re having trouble homing in on the perfect keyword for your next blog post, fear not! Just plug a word related to your topic into Übersuggest, and you’ll get a huge list of potential keywords to choose from.
Bonus Tip: Pair Übersuggest with the browser plugin Keyword Keg to get even more actionable information about your keywords. Übersuggest helps you come up with a ton of potential keywords to check out, and Keyword Keg or Chrome extension Keywords Everywhere runs basic analytics on all of them at once to help narrow down the search.
SEMRush
SEMRush is one of our go-to platforms for marketing analytics and search data and the only keyword/SEO tool we actually pay to use. If you’re looking to dig a little deeper into your content marketing strategy and keyword, SEMRush can give you the data-driven insights you’re looking for.
The internet is an excellent source of blogging inspiration. Pocket is an app that lets you save online articles to read later (even offline). You can even tag them with whatever project they relate to, so you can compartmentalize your research. This can also be a nice way to keep your sources saved so that you can cite them later.
Feedly
Whenever you are low on content ideas or strapped for time to create new content, use Feedly to compile the best blog articles on a given topic and promote it to your audience. Feedly lets you read your favorite go-to blogs, news sites, feeds, and YouTube channels from one single place, without having to check their sites for new updates. It makes it incredibly easy to share content from various sources in order to provide ongoing value to your followers.
Evernote
If you often find yourself struck with brilliant blogging ideas when you’re out to dinner or about to fall asleep, Evernote is the tool for you. Download the app on your phone so you can jot down ideas quickly, even when you’re away from your computer or office.
Further organize those ideas by creating a spreadsheet in Google Sheets, where you can list any random thoughts you have about an article.
ContentIdeator Pro
The driving force behind all of your content creation should be your audience. ContentIdeator Pro crawls millions of webpages and social channels to determine what content your audience is engaging with and looking for at any given moment.
BlogMutt Editorial Calendar
As soon as the BlogMutt team implemented an editorial calendar for our blog, we saw major improvements in web traffic, content quality, topic breadth, and overall organization.
In fact, we were so pleased and excited about the results that we decided to share that editorial calendar template with the world. You’re welcome!
CoSchedule
This platform offers a variety of marketing organization and content distribution tools to help your business maintain a consistent publishing and marketing schedule. Create custom workflows to save you and your team time, schedule out your blog content and accompanying social media posts, and keep track of your most important marketing deadlines — all with one handy tool.
750Words
Kali has touted this tool in a couple previous blog posts (here and here), but it’s worth mentioning again.
As Kali put it, “It’s critical for the procrastinator (ahem, me) to clear space for the mind to wander and begin to craft content in a clean interface. It all but begs for words! Plus, the reports after you hit the 750-word mark are fascinating.”
Thesaurus.com
This website should be bookmarked on every business blogger’s browser. Use it both to avoid repetition and keep your content interesting. Infusing your blog content with a nice variety of language is a crucial part of keeping readers engaged.
Grammarly
This free tool is perfect for making the final edits to your blog content. Both popular around the BlogMutt office and among many of our writers, Grammarly acts as a back-up editor for your blog. You can download the free plugin and have your content analyzed directly in your browser, or you can simply sign up for a free account and plug your content into their dashboard.
CoSchedule’s Headline Analyzer
Coming up with a powerful, SEO-friendly, and eye-catching headline is tough. This easy-to-use tool allows you to play around with variations of your headline and breaks down what works and what doesn’t.
This tool has been shared around the office frequently and has become a staple in our blog writing process.
Canva
This is another tool that we’ve recommended in past blog posts and that we use frequently on our own blog. This is a company that really has its stuff together and makes design accessible even for the most inept.
Pablo by Buffer
Create social media images in 30 seconds flat using Pablo by Buffer. This simple yet powerful design tool is similar to Canva and will help you customize graphics to include your own messaging. It’s perfect for pulling out quotes from a post or creating brand-specific featured images.
Giphy
We love gifs here at BlogMutt and try to incorporate them into our content whenever possible. They engage readers well and keep posts digestible and fun. Giphy’s search of ‘reactions’ is excellent.
RawPixel
These guys reached out to us recently to spread the word about their offering, and they have really high quality, free (!) images you’re welcome to use and/or modify with an account. Their images are perfect for when you’re feeling uninspired by your typical image sources.
Infogr.am
Infographics are liked and shared on social media 3 times more than other any other type of content, but many businesses still neglect them. Infogr.am is an easy-to-use infographics creator that allows you to add graphs, maps, text, and even videos to enrich your content strategy. It’s a great tool to convert your text content into beautiful infographics that give your audience new ways to engage.
Unsplash
This is another office favorite for free, high-resolution stock photos. In fact, I found the featured image for this post on Unsplash. Thanks, Barn Images!
Ghost
If you’re looking for an alternative to the usual blogging platforms, consider Ghost. It fulfills the same role as WordPress but is more modern and sleek. It’s a favorite from our development team!
Jekyll
Jekyll is a static blog generation tool, meaning that almost no server setup is required to publish your content. Static sites are high-performing and very secure.
