Over 2.4 crore freshers look for a job in India each year. 80% of them are graduates or less, and the rest post graduates. About 47% are unemployed even after 6 months of graduation. Failing to crack the interview even after multiple chances is common among today’s freshers. The reasons are many.

Do not get disheartened or lose hope. Relax, read the article and be prepared with my tips the next time you get the interview call or walk-in.

  1. Does your resume appeal to the prospective employer?

Your resume forms the initial impression for the recruiter. Make sure you check the resume for any typos, read aloud and understand every word in your resume before you email it or upload to the job site. Do not copy paste; be original. Add information about workshops or seminars attended, certifications, hobbies, etc.

Your resume has to first get past any online or human filters set up by the potential employer. Avoid tables as some parsing filters may output inaccurate information. It is further reviewed, shortlisted and then the comes the call or email to appear for the interview. Skills, courses or projects pertaining to the domain of the potential employer will appeal to the recruiter.

2. Have your completed the background research about the company?

I would prefer to hire someone who is already aware about my business than one who did not take the time to even peruse the company website. Research sites such as Glassdoor for employee reviews and salary projections. Check the employer website and LinkedIn or Social Media pages for products, solutions, services and partnerships or alliance information.

When was it established? What are its projects, major clients, locations, etc.? Note down 3 or 4 clarifications from your research when your turn comes to ask questions to the interviewer! This shows your seriousness in the job search.

3. Remember to practice the introduction — the first 30 seconds make the difference.

I strongly recommend that you practice the introduction several times till you get it right. A common question in interviews is “tell me something about yourself.” — though these details are mentioned in the resume! Instead of just reiterating your name, family background & academic achievements, use this to your advantage. Talk about your contribution in a critical mini or major project and skills that you possess, or display your passion towards a technology or domain.

4. Understand interview etiquette and dress code.

Your attire, hair, shoes & other accessories should be well taken care off. Wear neatly pressed shirts and pants or salwar kameez or skirts footwear depending on the company culture. Do not get unduly nervous or show any sign of anxiety during the interview session which may drag on for hours. Take sips of water to ensure you are not dehydrated during the interview. Switch off your mobile or place it in silent mode before entering the interview room. You are now ready to be seriously interviewed!

5. Body Language — It’s all about attitude.

Take permission to walk into the room and get the interview started with a smile. Remove your documents from a neat folder or laptop bag and place it on the table or adjacent chair and seat yourself comfortably. Make eye-contact with all the members of the interview panel. Be honest if you do not know the answer to any question. Remember not all companies are only looking at the academics, your attitude counts a lot too. Let them know you are eager to be on-board and contribute at the earliest. With proper practice and research, the chances of you getting the job will only increase.

Good Luck to all!
