I give because it’s literally the least I can do. There are so many ways to improve our world. Giving money to the people doing this work by filling out a credit card form online its a pretty minimal form of support.
There are so many marginalized people and so many problems within our society, I feel it is vital to empower organizations trying to fix this.
A few organizations I give to may give a sense of what I mean by this…
REACH Beyond Domestic Violence
Jews for Racial and Economic Justice
I wish I had the strength and energy to march in the streets, call politicians, and organize on a daily basis, but I don’t. These organizations do this work and they do it on behalf of victims of domestic violence, transphobia, misogyny, racism, and countless other forms of oppression. Furthermore, these organizations do this work with rather than do the people affected by oppression, which is an important distinction, especially in the non-profit/philanthropy space which has it’s own history (and present) of perpetuating problematic dynamics.
As a Jew I believe in the concept of tikun olam, repairing the world. If I can’t do it with my own two hands, I hope to help others who can.
