But isn’t it possible that these “white people” were genuinely enthralled by the beauty of children being children, skin tone and hair styles aside?

I’m curious why you put white people in quotes.
It is possible that I misread what I was seeing but at least with the first stranger she seemed more bemused than anything. I don’t think she would have watched white kids sitting on the ground, eating their lunch with the same mix of confusion and curiosity.
Since I was there, and you were not, I’d ask you to trust that I understand what I was seeing and feeling.
