Meaning of Inscriptions — Act of inscribing ( Write in or on).

Writing engraved on hand surface mostly written on rocks, stones, coins, walls of building, pillars, caves, metals etc.

  • Inscription used to say about event of the past.
  • Inscription writing various language such as Prakrit, Sanskrit, Kannada, Pali etc.

Other Name of inscription — engraving, impression etc.

  • There are 33 inscription in total(India).
  • The oldest inscription in India is “Edicts of Ashoka of the 3rd century BCE(In Brahmi Script).
  • Study of Inscription is called Epigraphy.
  • Inscriptions are the form of documents.
  • Samudra Gupta is known as the “father of Inscriptions”.
  • Ashoka was the first Indian ruler to create stone Inscription.
