A fabulous reminder! I recall spending a semester in West Germany in 1988 (and visiting East Berlin too…) and being amazed that there were so many streams for “waste” — paper, metal, glass, plastic and “Nassmull” or “wet waste” that was typically food waste. That forever shifted my understanding of the idea of garbage. Moving to NYC in 2009 was like stepping back in a time warp. Not in a good way.

I appreciate all of this, greatly. Thank you for putting it out there so concisely. A reflection/question to add: I wonder if we need to “all get together” or if it’s rather that we need to “all act in synch in some way”. If I look to nature as a guide, I don’t see all the acorns getting together with the nematodes and beetles. But I do see them (or…
