Raining Gold: When God Blesses Selfish People

The United States may be one of the most selfish nations in the world. It may also be one of the most wealthy. So — the question is, why has God continued to bless a people who do not acknowledge Him?

This article is just a sample of how the wealthy grow even wealthier. Money already exists as a strong vice for so many people in the United States and the accumulation of wealth appears to be the height of success.

In his book, Sex and Money, Paul Tripp writes, “When I live for the short-term buzz of any pleasure, because it cannot give me lasting satisfaction I go back again and again…” (65). He explains the danger of finding identity in wealth and material things.

As a future journalist, I am all too accustomed to seeing stories about how money leads to or exposes corruption. While Tripp contends that money in itself is not evil, he also asserts that finding pleasure in our wealth alone is misplaced. Because our culture does not follow Christ, we place our desire and identity in other places, such as sex and money.

The news constantly broadcasts scandal after scandal, revealing hearts of people who are so wrapped up in pursuing their own pleasure that they ransack the lives of those around them.

As Christians, we need to view money through an appropriate lens. It is a blessing and resource given by God, but it was never intended to be worshiped and desired above the Giver Himself. As we model this perspective, we can be a light to a world living in darkness.
