Great piece. As much as I tout freedom and relaxation as necessary to creativity, I have a hard time relinquishing the notion that my time has to amount to something — in other words, even downtime is expected to yield some kind of product. It’s amazing what a challenge it is to simply let oneself be.

I think your point about our species riding on the coattails of previous generations’ reserves of leisure-inspired creativity is cogent — and chilling.
