Rising Women Power in India
As the country gears itself to becoming a prospective super power, development is galloping at an unprecedented rate like never before.
Start-Up Era
It can rightly be called the Start-Up era. Hundreds of new businesses are born every day, some taken up by top companies as their protégés.
Among one such start-up was PRIYADHARSHINI CABS, by a woman entrepreneur. This is a cab service for ladies, and has women drivers, who pick up and drop them safely at their destination, round the clock.
I had an opportunity to travel with one lady driver, last week on my return to Mumbai, where this service runs. With Uber running into a rape case in Delhi, women were very insecure and this service launch can be a boon for solitary women travelers.
I was assigned a lady driver by name Sunitha. She was so cheerful and just as we got out of the airport, and on to the main road, a huge SUV, blocked her path, with that car’s driver using swear words at her. She maintained her cool and kept smiling. That impressed me so much enough to begin a conversation.
I enquired about her hours of duty, which she said would run 24/7 and the breaks were decided by her. On her driving skills, I was told, they were trained by expert instructors and also taught Karate for self- defence and for protection of their passengers. Also a soft skills training.
I further probed as to why, she chose this job to any other. She replied, saying she was not educated and didn’t want to work as a maid. So she had approached this company and at the interview she has confessed she had no money to shell out for the training which approximately came to $200. She further added that her boss agreed to train her and cut from her salary.
As soon as they finish, they are handed over their car which remains with them till they work with the company.
Listening further I came to asking about her family. She said, her husband not willing to let his wife drive, and put up with her erratic schedule has left her and her two kids. Now her son works and her daughter too has a job, both staying with her but don’t contribute towards their expenses.
I COULDNOT UPLOAD HER IMAGE HERE. WILL TRY LATER.
Through all her suffering she has come through with great success to boldly work in a male dominated arena and keeps smiling. She meets new customers everyday and everyday is a new day for her.
I could have posted this in my blog, and women like her may not get to know and read medium. This is for all women, who may have had setbacks in their lives and now wish to break their fences and move on.
It’s sometimes inertia, sometimes fear, at other times the stigma. Remember the other side of fear is PARADISE. come out. Break free. Soar high.
