MA-07: Ayanna Pressley

The big news of tonight’s primary elections took place practically in my back yard, where Ayanna Pressley’s grassroots campaign upset Mike Capuano’s 20 year incumbency.

Listening to Pressley’s acceptance speech, I had a sense of watching an historic moment. She captured something about this particular moment in our political culture, a rising movement to broaden who gets to speak and who we choose to lead. “Change can’t wait” was her refrain — and her excited followers too.

In other MA contests, Democrat Jay Gonzalez will face off against Charlie Baker for the gubernatorial race. Stephen Lynch gets to keep his seat against two primary challengers including Brianna Wu. Secretary of State William P. Galvin moves on to the general election after defeating Josh Zakim in what was one of the more negative campaigns of the season.

In other news of the day, if the headline North Carolina's unconstitutional gerrymandered map will be used in midterms makes you go “wait that can’t be right”, you’re not the only one, but a Federal court decided that it is too close to the election to redraw the maps now. At least, even if the North Carolina state government tries to retain its Republican lock on power — for now — they’ll be forced to redraw fairer maps after Nov 6. Sadly here, change will have to wait.
