I love the article! As someone with yet another distinctive last name (especially being born and raised here in the US), it really is amusing and somewhat challenging to hear others try and pronounce a 3-word last name. That being said I have nothing on you, Haukur!
On a tangent about names, I spent some time living in Taiwan (they speak Mandarin Chinese there), and the way they choose names there is fascinating, and often untranslatable to English. Their last name is determined by their distant, famous ancestor (for example have the last name of “Yellow” after the “Yellow Emperor” roughly 2000 years ago), and their full name is often very poetic or symbolic. For example, women often have “beauty” as one of the 2 words in their full name (excluding last name), or men often have “foundation” or “light” in their names. Parents name their children of the same gender the same first character, then a similar concept or sound for the second one of the full name.
Regardless of how you do it or what your name means, I believe names have a certain significance and influence on a person and their lives. I hope we can all give respect that the names deserve.
