Perhaps the large population of subadults this year is another contributing factor. Many of the bears that stuck around in August were subadults or very young adults (e. g. 503). It may be that they don’t “know any better” and since there were salmon present, they were able to make a good living at the falls (especially with the many of the large males fishing elsewhere). If the salmon continue to be present in subsequent years, these young bears won’t have the need to go elsewhere, and may try to fish the falls all through summer and into fall!
