Bible Study: Original Sin

“Secrecy is the original sin. The fig leaf in the Garden of Eden. The basic crime against love.” – Timothy Leary.

I don’t like being lied to. Much like Tom Cruise, I want the truth. I like facts. There’s value in being right. And while seemingly selfish, it usually comes from an objective, completely selfless and very necessary place.

Unfortunately, people don’t like being wrong. It’s not much fun, I’ve been told. In fact some people hate being wrong so much that they just stop being true. Too many people would rather be right than to actually learn. They know they have no idea what they’re talking about, but they keep that a secret. These people are called liars, among other things. And who likes a liar? Besides 46% of American voters.

In school, if a child has a question they raise their hand. When they get an answer, they stop raising their hand. And when they get the same answer for every question they have, eventually they stop raising their hand. They stop asking questions and very dangerous things happen. “God.” is not an answer to a question. Stop telling children that it is. They deserve to know the truth as much as you, me, and yes, even Tom Cruise.

“But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” Genesis 2:17

Speaking of lies, in only the second chapter of the Holy Bible, God manages to lie, pass the buck, and punish a poor bastard who didn’t simply believe what he was told. Even though it was a lie. While the truth is later exposed by a serpent, apparently played by Satan in this iconic scene, when he

“said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die. For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” Genesis 3:4 – 5

God, being the liar that he is, threw a hissy fit, and decided that over the top punishment was the best way to deal with an inquisitive mind. A mind not dissimilar to that of an innocent child who, having not been given the knowledge of good and evil to begin with, couldn’t have known any better than to trust a talking snake, or even more unbelievably, his own wife.

God’s lies and secrecy are the original, original sin and when you force these stories into children today, tomorrow you get a world of people who don’t know any better or are too afraid to ask.

Hey, kids, we’ve all done things we weren’t supposed to. That’s why we have divorce. But simply being born is not something for which you should feel guilty, unless you’re a Kardashian. You should not feel ashamed of asking questions. You should not feel ashamed of being wrong. Take pride in learning because that’s how we grow.

And for those of you like myself who were once victims of Sunday school teachings yourselves, I must confess to my own sin. I’ve been judging you when it really isn’t your fault. But I’m going to stop judging you for the insane, immoral, and incomprehensible garbage you were forced to believe.

It is not your fault. You have been lied to.

“For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.”- Proverbs 2:6

No, the Lord talketh shit, and out of his mouth cometh not much else.

If you love your children, teach them truth.
