The problem with the whole “he didn’t mean what he actually said” is that once you accept that as reasonable then the person can never be held accountable for the things he says because he can always go back and retroactively change the meaning of his words to fit his narrative.
This is even more important in this whole “I’m going to try and get you to show your bias” argument because if he is allowed to say anything and retroactively change it’s meaning he can always spin his answer in a manner that supports his case.
It is a cheap and one note trick that is only used by someone who must constantly deflect things and isn’t confident enough to just stand behind the controversial things they say…calling this some sort of “smart” strategy entirely misses the point and lets the speaker off the hook for their own personal responsibility.
You saw him say it himself…he doesn’t vote…he doesn’t choose a side…he doesn’t take a stand. This is because he feels much better about himself by telling other people why they’re wrong and doesn’t want to stand for something cause then he would have to own it.
