Don’t hurry.

Haste will ruin what you make and do.

“There can be an intense egoism in following everybody else. People are in a hurry to magnify themselves by imitating what is popular-and too lazy to think of anything better. Hurry ruins saints as well as artists. They want quick success and they are in such a haste to get it that they cannot take time to be true to themselves. And when madness is upon them they argue that their very haste is a species of integrity.”
-Thomas Merton

Haste will cause you to throw out your deepest values. It will cause you to eliminate the very soul that makes your work truly your work.

By trying to hurry, you’ll trade in creativity and originality for the short-term, false sense of “success”. You’ll be throwing away the soul of your work just to save some time. You won’t be creating anymore. What you create won’t mean anything to you.

Art, what you create, is supposed to have emotion. It is supposed to make you feel. It is supposed to form connections. There is a part of your soul in everything you create, a spark that shines in everything you do. But if you hurry, if you end up following others, doing what’s popular, just to save some time and effort, you won’t end up with your art, it will just be some stuff.

We already have too much stuff in this world, but we can never have too much art. If you are true to yourself, if you take your time, if you showcase who you are, if you use creativity, you will create art.

Start making art. Stop making just some stuff.

So stop hurrying. Stop letting haste control what you make and do. Stop falling into the trap of following what is popular just because it seems easier.

You don’t need easy. You need what is true to yourself. The world doesn’t need what is easy for you. It needs what is in your heart and soul.
