The Power of Disbelief: Or, How My Misdiagnoses Almost Killed Me

Preventable medical error is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, behind heart disease and cancer.

It is, in a way, almost more comforting to think that perfect care exists and that you were denied because of your gender. If that were true, then we would have to fix sexism and not a completely broken healthcare system.

Even Robin Williams, a very rich white man, suffered misdiagnosis and treatment that likely made him worse. This is the system we have right now. That man had access to the best in the world and he suffered medical mistakes too.

I am glad you are better. I hope we can leverage conversations like this to improve the system for everyone, because it’s bad for all of us.
